Our Mission
To provide crowdfunding services at a reasonable cost for independent graphic novel & comic book creators without arbitrary cancellations, search engine & site-based shadowbans, tortious interference, or favoritism.
Why We Exist
In late November (or early December) of 2022, we became aware of creator shadowbanning at Indiegogo via a Tweet by Ethan Van Sciver. Although we can’t find the original Tweet, we did find the Clownfish TV video originally linked to in that Tweet.
Although to us the story seemed to break at roughly the same time as definitive proof emerged of politically-based shadowbanning at Twitter under former CEOs Jack Dorsey and Parag Agrawal, we were wrong. Unbeknownst to us, some in the comics press had exposed Indiegogo’s shadowbans and Kickstarter’s campaign cancellations roughly a month earlier:
- Numerous ComicsGate IndieGoGo Campaigns Appear To Be Getting Shadowbanned By The Crowdfunding Platform (Del Arroz, Jon. Bounding Into Comics. Nov 4, 2022.)
- Indiegogo Shadow-Banning Mike Baron’s ‘Private American’ & Other Campaigns (Ashley, Jamison. Bleeding Fool. Nov 11, 2022.)
- Social Justice Comic Creator Organizes Mob to Cancel Mike Baron’s Campaign (Braly, Chris. Bleeding Fool. Dec 9, 2022.)
It was the concurrence of the Kickstarter campaign cancellations and Indiegogo shadowbans that was particularly troubling. Prior to this, censorship at any one of the two major crowdfunding platforms was seen as somewhat tolerable, provided that independent graphic novel & comic book creators could take refuge in the other.
However, once the two dominant crowdfunding platforms began simultaneously blacklisting and censoring independent artists, the latter had almost no platform left to go to.
Which was the impetus for creating this site. At Champion This Project!, we believe that crowdfunding platforms have one job: To help creators crowdfund their projects.
Not to police creators’ offsite associations or social media statements.
Terms of Use
We have rules on our Terms of Use page that all users must adhere to. And we reserve the right to reject projects that are egregiously offensive to public morals.
Once a project has been accepted though, we see no reason to suspend or cancel a project unless creators intentionally violate our Terms of Use.
UPDATE (October 26, 2023): The Terms of Use link on this page has been updated to the beta testing version.
